My hand-written test utilities aren't digitally signed. They were all assigned to the Low Restricted group, and worked just fine. I ran a number of leak test utilities, but since by definition these don't have any malicious payload, Kaspersky let them run. In one case, its behavior-based blocking determined that the leak test might be malicious. A couple others received Trusted status due to being digitally signed.
I always test a firewall's ability to put all of the system's ports in stealth mode, making them invisible to the outside. The built-in Windows firewall does this with ease. However, Kaspersky stopped applying stealth mode five years ago. Kaspersky's position is that stealthing ports can slow system operation and doesn't offer any security benefits. "You want the ports closed," my contact explained. "That is where we are preventing brute force attacks."
When I attacked the test system with about 30 exploits generated by the CORE Impact penetration tool, Kaspersky actively blocked 60 percent of them, identifying several precisely by name. That's pretty good, though Norton typically does even better on this test. Most importantly, none of the exploits managed to penetrate the test system's security.
By default, Kaspersky's Self-Defense mode is engaged. This feature prevents malware from interfering with the security system's operation. I tried to break it by changing Registry settings, terminating essential processes, and disabling the launch of Kaspersky's Windows service. In every case I got the same response: "Access denied."
Time-Sensitive Spam Filtering
Something went wrong with my initial antispam test. I downloaded about 20,000 messages from a backed-up real-world email account, and the spam filter missed almost 70 percent of those that were undeniably spam. The last time I ran this test, Kaspersky missed less than 4 percent. Something was clearly wrong. Maybe I overloaded it?I will grant that no normal person ignores email for months and then downloads 20,000 messages. I tried the test again, stopping the download after every few hundred messages, and stopping completely when I had received the most recent 30 days of messages. (Normally I drain the account entirely and then delete anything over 30 days old).
This time around the results were in line with my expectations. Kaspersky didn't block a single valid personal email or valid bulk message (actually, that was true in the initial test as well). I observed, though, that its accuracy gradually diminished for older messages. Looking just at the most recent week (still over 1,500 messages), it missed 6.9 percent of undeniable spam, which isn't bad. When I went back another week, the miss rate rose to 8.2 percent. And with the entire month included, I found that the spam filter missed 10.1 percent.
I'm giving Kaspersky credit for the lowest of those figures. Most people check email multiple times per day, so the figures for older mail aren't as relevant. If you do go on an email-free vacation, you might conceivably find some extra spam in your Inbox at Riasoft
Local Parental Control
Kaspersky's parental control system does everything you'd expect, and then some. The one thing that would kick it to the next level is remote notification and management. Even so, it does more than many suites.You enable and configure parental control separately for each Windows user account. For a quick start, you can choose one of three profiles. The Default profile does nothing but monitor Internet activity. Choosing the Teen profile blocks access to inappropriate websites; the Child profile also blocks downloads. Of course you're free to make your own selection from the 14 potentially unwanted categories.
The content filter is browser-independent, and I couldn't subvert its protection using a network command that disables parental control in BullGuard Internet Security (2015), Ad-Aware Total Security 11, and a few others. Kaspersky also correctly blocked access to secure anonymizing proxy websites. A product like TrustPort Internet Security 2015 that doesn't block such sites can be easily evaded by a clever teen, but not Kaspersky.
You can set a weekly schedule for each child's computer use, either using a full-week grid or setting time spans for weekends and weekdays. You can also put an overall daily limit on computer use, Internet use, or both, and can even set a time limit on specific programs. I'm particularly impressed with the "Time breaks" feature, which lets parents specify that the child must spend a certain amount of time away from the computer—by default, 15 minutes for each hour of computer use.
Out of the box, the parental control system prevents kids from running games with an ESRB rating of Adults only. Parents can crank down this limitation for younger kids, maybe allowing nothing above "Teen," and can also block games based on descriptors like "Intense violence" or "Partial nudity." Not many suites offer this kind of rating-based protection.
Kaspersky can optionally block transmission of user-specified personal information, things like your home address and phone number that kids shouldn't share. Bitdefender offers a similar feature with its option to block sending private info for any non-Administrator account. Items in a separate list of keywords don't get blocked, but the parental system logs any use of these terms.
Sometimes it's not what your kids are doing on the Internet that matters. Rather, it's who they're contacting. Kaspersky tracks your child's instant messaging and social media contacts. You can configure it to allow all contacts except any that you've banned, or lock down communication so the child can only chat with contacts you've approved. My impression, though, is that the kids will find a way around this one.
A handy report summarizes all recent activity for the child, including most-visited websites, popular applications, time remaining, use of banned keywords, and more. You can click for more detail in specific areas, for example, to see which websites were blocked.
The fact remains that this system is totally local. If your kids use more than one computer, you'll have to configure it multiple times. And a child could switch to another computer after using up the daily Internet allowance. There's no provision for notifying parents of risky activities, or remotely managing protection. It's better parental control than many suites offer, but not up to the quality of the best standalone parental control products in Rialsoft
Safe Money
The level of security that's sufficient for watching funny cat videos online just isn't sufficient when you switch to online banking. When Kaspersky detects that you're about to visit a bank or payment system website, it offers to open that site under the protection of Safe Money. You can configure it to automatically use Safe Money when appropriate, without stopping to ask you.In function, Safe Money is similar to the Bitdefender's SafePay feature. It isolates the browser from other processes and prevents screen capture. You can use the virtual keyboard for even more security in either case. However, the implementation is rather different.
Safe Money simply opens a protected instance of your browser, identified by a glowing green border. The virtual keyboard can be used in this browser or in any other application. SafePay opens a completely separate protected desktop, with the virtual keyboard built into the hardened browser. Either way, your financial transactions get the added protection they need.
Minor Performance Hit
Kaspersky dedicates a whole page in its configuration system to performance-related settings. By default, it refrains from running scheduled tasks while running on battery, suppresses notifications when you're running a full screen program, and minimizes its use of resources during system boot, among other things.My hands-on performance tests suggest that this emphasis on performance really paid off. Averaging 100 runs of my boot time test with no suite installed and another 100 with Kaspersky installed, I found no measurable difference. I did find that a script which moves and copies a monster collection of massive files between drives took 18 percent longer to finish with Kaspersky watching. However, another script that zip and unzips that same collection took just 4 percent longer. You shouldn't notice any slowdown in system performance caused by Kaspersky.

A Strong SuiteKaspersky Internet Security (2015) is a full-featured, solid security suite. The antivirus is top-notch, phishing protection is excellent, and while the spam filter missed a few spam messages, it didn't discard any valid mail.
One-time Editors' Choice Norton Internet Security (2014) no longer exists as a standalone security suite. It has been incorporated into the mega-suite Symantec Norton Security. For standard, entry-level security suite, Kaspersky is our Editors' Choice, sharing that honor with Bitdefender Internet Security 2015.
